A stunning new book of photographic images of Wanganui has hit local bookstores this week. Discover Wanganui is by professional photographer Mark Brimblecombe and Kiwiwebs boss Nygllhuw (Nigel) Morris, and published locally by H&A Design and Print. Mark took all but two of the 120-plus images in the book while Nigel was responsible for the layout and words. Mayor Annette Main wrote the foreword.
Nigel describes the book as a visual tour through the Wanganui district and the Whanganui River. “It’s designed to promote Wanganui as a destination and the river as the scenic icon of our district.”
The book is divided into different categories, with sections on Wanganui city, the district and the river. Mark says most of the images represent people, places and events, with “some fantastic shots of Wanganui scenery and attractions.”
So how did Discover Wanganui come about? Mark supplies images for the Wanganui District Council and its official Wanganui website www.wanganui.com, which is managed by Kiwiwebs, hence his association with Nigel. “We’ve been working together more and more on different projects and after releasing my book on China in February, Mark mentioned we should do one for Wanganui,” says Nigel. “That was in March, April, and so we made a start. Mark has a fantastic library of images and he’s just taken new images as needed, hence the reason why the cover is the beautiful new southern gateway. And we’ve just moved on from there. It’s the most up-to-date Wanganui book on the market.”
They originally came up with about 60 images for the book but that grew to 120 images covering 100-or-so pages. The pair are very happy with the finished product and think it will appeal to both locals and visitors. But most of all, they see it as a great gift and an ideal way to promote the area. “So many people who come here, including those of us who have come to live here in recent years, think that Wanganui is actually one of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand. And you could say that one of the purposes of the book is simply to show that,” says Mark. “There have been some great books on Wanganui in the past but it was a case of, right now, there isn’t a higher-end book on the market and that’s where we felt this fitted in nicely. It’ll be a perfect Christmas present, a perfect birthday present, a perfect anytime present!”
He added that the book would complement the Wanganui District Council’s new marketing and TV campaign to promote the city.
Discover Wanganui costs $39.95 and will be available from local bookshops, i-SITEs, and online at wanganui.com or Mark and Nigel’s respective websites markbrimblecombe.com and kiwiwebs.info. They also hope motels and hotels will stock the book. |
