Leica D-Lux 5

This is my new 'compact'. No substitute for the Nikon D3, but it has one major advantage... small and lightweight (270 g). It also has that beautiful little red Leica logo, making it a fashion accessory!

Main specifications of importance to me...

10 Megapixels CCD Sensor. Good high ISO
Lens: Leica DC Vario-Summicron 1:2-3.3/5.1-19.2 mm ASPH
- that is 24-90mm equivalent in 35mm format
- f/2 is maximum aperture, and that is fast!

It shoots in manual and RAW

This camera is very easy to use in manual mode to set shutter speed and aperture. The best results for the widest range of dynamic brightness, and low noise, are at the lowest ISO 80 and shooting RAW. It is also easy to move the focus point in this mode.
What has really surprised me is the great results when using the fully automatic 'Snapshot' mode. This is great for quick shooting and giving the camera to a 'point and shoot' user. The resulting jpegs are nearly always well exposed thanks to the Leica onboard software.
The most recent photos (photos towards the end of Gallery 2) are a little blurred with apparent lens flare... but I just discovered my greasy fingerprints on the lens!!
