Nikon D-3

My main camera is a Nikon D3.

There are many great thinks about this camera, but best of all in my opinion is that it has BIG pixels.

A few years ago I wrote this...

The pixels on this camera’s sensor (and the D700) are 50% larger than in the newer Nikon and Canon 24 megapixel cameras, and top of the line Hasselblad medium format digital cameras. This enables capture of much more shadow detail, higher dynamic range, and very low noise up to 6400 ISO. If this doesn’t explain why the D3 is the best digital camera, and why Mark is not upgrading to a Nikon D3x (besides the price tag), then ask. Needless to say, the D3 can extract more RAW detail in shadow areas and ‘clipped’ highlights, because the bigger pixels can detect fewer photons of light and the bigger pixels can take more photons of light without ‘overflowing’.

There is an excellent technical article on ClarkVision.com which explains the significance of pixel size over and above the number of megapixels on a digital camera sensor.

This camera model has now been replaced with the D3S... which is apparently better on pixel performance (good to ISO 12,800), though with the same size massive pixels.

Here's Ken Rockwell's review on the Nikon D3.
